RIBBON OF LIGHT

Balcony Press 2023

—In Ribbon of Light, Gil brings his unique eye for design to document the construction of Los Angeles's newest fusion of art and function: the 6th Street Viaduct. Connecting Downtown to Boyle Heights, the bridge, which opened in 2022, is unique in the city due to its focus on people rather than automobiles. In this case, Gil's work captures not only the beauty of the bridge itself but the start of a potential shift in the city's future as well.

From Gil’s Photographer’s Book Statement: My goal with this book is to share the beauty and inspiration the 6th Street Viaduct Bridge brings not just to the the viewer of this book, but to every person who visits or uses this bridge. This bridge was designed specifically for people to use - as well as for the vehicles that will cross the bridge. This was a very challenging bridge to build . But it was all the people who worked on this bridge and whose expertise, dedication, and talent, both public and private workers, that made this bridge possible. This book is a salute to each of them.

The photographs I made cover elements that might be less than obvious,; an attempt to capture the inspiration that the architecture brings the viewer and user of the bridge; its focus on shape, form, and shadow; how the movement of natural light and man made light changes the mood and feel of the bridge. Take your time in taking in the details of each photograph.

Lastly, my hope is that the photographs inspire you to visit the bridge with friends, family, or just by your self. If you walk away from the bridge having SEEN and absorbed the beauty of the bridge, perhaps you will walk away thankful to the people who designed and constructed this iconic structure. Surely, you will walk away with a smile.
